Social media: going the right direction?

September 11, 2018

I don't know about you, but I spend a lot of time on social media. And I think I've noticed something.

When Bad Moms Canada started two years ago (gasp! what? yes!) it was pretty clear that we were trying to buck trends. We were a group of women, friends already made or in the making, that couldn’t stand being shamed for how we mommed, how we lived, or how we played our "roles" as women in society. So much of that shame and negativity came (at the time) from social media, and outlets in the media putting down moms who maybe were desperate, maybe who had no one.

The Bad Moms Canada ladies came together to unify against the negativity out there, and became hard core MAMS (moms against mom-shaming). At the time, when Bad Moms started, I had my own run-ins with shamers, and it sucked because I was so alone in so many of my feelings, and needed the opposite: I needed some solidarity, I needed some support. My husband, my best friend for so long, seemed so far away from me because he simply, wasn't a woman or a mom going through the same things. This doesn't take away from his efforts of trying to understand (bless him), it just wasn't easy to be me, and then lots of times, get shamed for being me, trying to mom and human as best I could. And there were SO MANY OTHER WOMEN feeling the same.

It turns out I wasn't alone in so many of my experiences, and that’s exactly why Bad Moms Canada started. I had only seen a little glimpse of the positive mom movement starting, but knew Canadian mamas needed to vent and come together. There needed to be a space where moms in Canada could laugh, and share info, and stories, and support each other. And that place happened to be on social media with the blog (www.badmomscanada.com) and social media.

Fast forward to September 2018.

You know what I see on my social media feeds, more in the media, and online now? It's only been two years since I've really been watching, but I'm starting to see a trend.

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but I'm starting to see more women-positive messaging: women and men sharing positive messages about parenting, momming, being an individual, and being supportive of other women.

Sure, there’s the regular asshole troll, the mom-shamers and the judgey McJudgersons that prey on all of us that are trying to lift up, not bring down our fellow mamas, but seriously: you know what’s great when I’m having a bad morning and trying to get my mojo in order so I can bring myself to go to the gym, or push through my anxiety and be fun with my kids? you know what’s great? That now, online, I see there’s a whole world of amazing women DOING EXACLTY THE SAME THING. And women are saying to each other: Hey you! You are AWESOME.

So although yeah, social media has been a real dick sometimes in the past, more and more I’m seeing a change towards the positive.

Maybe it’s because more women are realizing, hey, WE ARE AWESOME, AND YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY.

What do you think? Has social media taken a turn for the better?
